Red Bank, NJ, May 30, 2006 – Two River Theater Company presents its first summer theater production Accomplice, written by Rupert Holmes and directed by Daniel Gerroll. In this sensational and thrilling murder mystery set on the English Moors, a sex-starved wife and her lover plan to murder her husband. The production runs from June 29 to July 16 in the Joan & Robert Rechnitz Theater.
The cast will include: Accomplice director Daniel Gerroll, an OBIE award recipient for sustained excellence in theater who appeared in Plenty and The Homecoming on Broadway and had featured roles on the TV series Sex and the City, Sisters, and Knots Landing; Kate Hodge, a seasoned television actress whose credits include Silk Stalkings, American Pie, The George Wendt Show, and Level 9; Ted Deasy (Cyrano de Bergerac at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and Mame at the Alex Theatre), and Phoebe Jonas (host of VH1’s Rock of Ages). The design team for Accomplice will include Dan Kuchar (set) and Melissa Schlachtmeyer (costumes).
The cast was to feature Gerroll’s wife Patricia Kalember who had starred as ‘Georgie’ Reed Whitsig in TV’s Emmy-nominated series Sisters and Sussanah Shephard in the Golden Globe-winning series thirtysomething. The pair teamed up once before on a production of Accomplice at the Bay Street Theatre in 2001. However, Patricia had to recently back out because of another project.
Accomplice is a hilarious whodunit in which two wealthy out-of-town couples find themselves alone and at each other’s throats inside a dark, mysterious English mansion. Shocking in one moment, and hilarious in the next, it’s up to the audience to find out who’s doing what to whom. There isn’t much more that can be revealed about the plot without spoiling the fun. Or as Holmes himself writes, “Even if I told you the truth, I’d be lying.”
Writer, composer, and performer Rupert Holmes was born and raised in England. Today, he attributes his love of the arts to his eclectic musical upbringing. However, it wasn’t until he arrived in America in the 1960s that he began to pursue a career as a musician. His name became most well known for his 1979 pop hit “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” and several other ballads he wrote for Barbra Streisand.
In 1986, Rupert Holmes turned his attention to Broadway, breaking new ground with the Tony award-winning musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Holmes tackled the book, music, lyrics, and orchestration as a solo endeavor. The Mystery of Edwin Drood received five Tony Awards including Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. Holmes’ other production credits include Solitary Confinement, Thumbs, and Goosebumps. Most recently, he received a Best Play Tony nomination for his 2004 Broadway hit Say Goodnight Gracie.
For his 1990 Broadway production of Accomplice, Rupert Holmes received the highly coveted Edgar Award (the “Oscar of Crime”) from the Mystery Writers of America. This “devilishly clever” thriller (LA Times) is now performed throughout the world. Sag Harbor’s distinguished Bay Street Theatre and Chicago’s Buffalo Theatre Ensemble have produced two of the latest productions. Accomplice has also won the DramaLogue award for Best Play for its record-breaking world premiere run at the Pasadena Playhouse.
