(Red Bank, NJ) As Two River Theatre Company (TRTC) embarks on its tenth anniversary season, it plans to break ground for its new home in Red Bank. Founded in 1995, TRTC performed its first seasons on the campus of Monmouth University. After outgrowing that space, TRTC moved to the Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan, where they have been in residence for five seasons. Now, TRTC is poised to enter its next decade in its own performance space.
The site of the new theater is the Blaisdell Lumber Yard located on the west side of Red Bank, across from the Galleria. This is the ideal site for our new home, said Robert M. Rechnitz, TRTCs executive producer. It is centrally located, easy to reach by train or car and large enough for us to build a spacious, unique, and fully accessible production space. It is anticipated that ground breaking will occur this summer with project completion anticipated in the fall of 2004. The project has received approvals from the Red Bank planning board and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
The theatre has been designed by the world-renowned architectural firm of Hardy, Holzman and Pfeiffer. Like their other well-known buildings, including the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia and the Harvey Theater at Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Two River Theatre will be an instant landmark and a prestigious addition to the architecture of Red Bank. The Two River Theatre will be a state-of-the-art performance space with a main theater seating 300 people, centered around a thrust stage with the furthest seats no more than forty feet from the performers. The new theater will be an intimate, dynamic performance space, said Jonathan Fox, TRTCs artistic director. The relatively small size of the house sets us apart from the larger venues in the area, such as the Count Basie and Pollack Theatres. The new venue will complement, not compete with, existing performance spaces.
TRTC has launched Two Rivers Rising: Building an Intimate Home for the Arts, an unprecedented $15,000,000 capital campaign. The Two River Theatre Company has potentially secured two-thirds of the funding required to build its new home through the generosity of a local family, who has pledged $5,000,000 with a challenge to raise funds from the community, which will be matched dollar for dollar, up to an additional $5,000,000.
To date, the Two River Theatre Company has raised more than $1,000,000 towards the $5,000,000 challenge. We are delighted with the response we have received, said Mary Carol Stunkel, TRTC Board President. Everyone weve talked to is enthusiastic about the new theater coming to Red Bank.TRTC thanks the Charter Donors* who have made gifts to the capital campaign:
