(Red Bank, NJ) - Two River Theatre Company (TRTC), Monmouth Countys acclaimed regional theatre, now in its tenth anniversary season, will break ground on a new home, the Two River Theatre in Red Bank. A ground breaking ceremony will be held Wednesday, October 22 at 10:30 am, on the site of the new theatre, Bridge Avenue between Monmouth Street and Front Street, across from The Galleria. The Honorable Edward McKenna, Mayor of Red Bank, and Robert Rechnitz, Founder of TRTC, will be featured speakers. State and local government dignitaries, as well as the architects and builders of the new building, theatre patrons and donors to the capital campaign will attend the ceremony. Red Bank businesses, various state and county arts organizations, civic groups and theatre artists will also be represented. The ground breaking ceremony is open to the public.
Two River Theatre Company envisions the new Two River Theatre as a home to all the arts. In addition to Two River Theatre Companys season of 5 plays, the building will host a wide variety of other performing arts organizations, including local and national dance and music groups. For regional visual artists, a gallery space has been created. The 300 seat theatre will provide needed space for conferences and business meetings, with the potential to bring hundreds of customers into local shops and restaurants.
The new Two River Theatre is a crucial part of the Town of Red Banks plan to complete and sustain the rejuvenation of Down Town and the West Side. As with cities all over the country, Red Bank is creating an arts district to increase foot traffic across town, boost visibility within the state and lure new visitors to the area. The Arts Corridor, running down Monmouth Street from Broad Street to Bridge Avenue, will be anchored by the Count Basie Theatre, the Childrens Cultural Center and the Two River Theatre on the west side of town. These institutions will complement one another in size and programming and, together with local galleries and town arts festivals, will build Red Banks reputation as an arts destination.
The new theatre was designed by the world-renowned architectural firm of Hardy Holzmann Pfeiffer Associates. With its dramatic glass lobby and sweeping roofline, the new building is certain to become an architectural landmark for Red Bank. A contract was recently signed with the Westfield based contractor, Torcon, to construct the building. Demolition of existing buildings on the site is complete and the ceremonial ground breaking will kick off construction. Ben Lucarelli of Versailles Realty Services will serve as construction Project Manager for the projected 17 month construction period. The building is scheduled to open early in 2005.
