Ain’t Misbehavin’

The Main Stage Series kicks off with Ain’t Misbehavin’ a rousing musical journey to the nightclubs of the Harlem Renaissance featuring music by Fats Waller. Running from September 27 – October 22, 2006, this 1978 Tony winner for “Best Musical” is based on a concept by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby, Jr. and will be directed by Saundra McClain. Ms. McClain also directed Ain’t Misbehavin’ at Playhouse on the Green—a production that won the Drama Critics Award for Best Ensemble. Her other credits include Death of a Salesman, Antigone, and To Be Young, Gifted and Black as Artistic Director of Troupe NY, The Women of Plums at Kennedy Center’s Youth and Family Program, and TRTC’s 2003 production of Spunk.

Saundra McClain has assembled a cast that includes James Alexander as Ken who received the Connecticut Critic Circle Award for the same role at Playhouse on the Green; recent Belmont University graduate Rebecca Covington as Charlaine; vocalist Lucy Shropshire as Armelia whose work alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Jennifer Holiday, and Mary Wilson in Las Vegas and elsewhere has won her awards and accolades from The Los Angeles Times, the Reno Area Music Awards, and even the United Nations; seasoned Off-Broadway and regional actor Charles E. Wallace as Andre who last appeared at TRTC in Spunk in 2003; and Kathleen Jackson as Nell.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ will be music directed by Ronald Metcalf who has appeared on Broadway as a musician in both Jelly’s Last Jam and Street Corner Symphony and has music directed Off-Broadway for The River, Williams and Walker, and Li’l Ham. The artistic team also includes Harry Feiner (scenic & lights), Moira Shaughnessy (costumes), Byron Easley (choreographer), and Darren Reid Sussman (sound).

Theater Series

The scene shifts from 1930s Harlem to 17th Century France for the next play, Moliere’s satirical comedy, Tartuffe, from November 15 – December 3, 2006. Next on stage is Sam Shepard’s raw human drama A Lie of the Mind, winner of the 1986 New York Drama Critics Award for Best Play of the Year, from January 17 – February 4, 2007. In the spring, TRTC is holding open its March slot for a collaboration with New Dramatists. New Dramatists members or alums have written six of the last eight Pulitzer Prize winners and the last two Tony winners for Best Play. From March 7 – 25, 2007, TRTC will present one of the newest plays by New Dramatists’ most talented, up-and-coming writers. This play will be directed by newly appointed Artistic Director Aaron Posner. Rounding out the season is the uproariously funny Steve Martin adaptation of the Carl Sternheim play The Underpants. Martin brings a sophisticated literary sensibility to this entertaining romp, examining the politics of sex and sexism from May 2 – 20, 2007. Single tickets range from $30 - $54 depending upon date selection. Students and young people under 26 get $15 tickets (valid ID required).
