TRTC Presents a “Jazzy Play”

by Sam Shepard

During Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival

(Red Bank, NJ) The new Two River Theater will inaugurate its second stage, the 99-seat Marion Huber Theater, with Sam Shepard’s Suicide in B-Flat on June 3, 4, & 5, to coincide with the Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival. The experimental space in TRTC’s new state-of-the-art performance facility will house this staged reading, complete with a live jazz score performed by Monmouth County’s Jerry Romano Quartet. Although thousands will attend the Festival, only 400 seats will be sold to this special event.

Sam Shepard subtitled this one-act play a “mysterious overture.” As two bumbling detectives study a chalk outline of a dead man, they quickly become overwhelmed as their investigation of a murder – or was it a suicide? – leads them into grappling with existential questions about art, jazz, and human nature. This absurdist comedy is told in a jazz riff style, similar to the way musicians improvise jazz solos. The play’s language itself is musical.

“The Marion Huber Theater is designed to be a place for unusual and experimental theater, and this play falls into that category,” said TRTC artistic director, Jonathan Fox, who is directing the performance. “This is a perfect theater piece for jazz lovers and adventurous theater-goers. I’m delighted to be working with Jerry Romano and his talented group of musicians on this remarkable and curious play.”

One of America’s most interesting and gifted playwrights, Mr. Shepard has written 45 plays, 11 of which have won Obie Awards.  His seminal play, Buried Child, received the 1979 Pulitzer Prize. As an actor, he has appeared in 16 films, receiving an Oscar nomination for his performance in The Right Stuff. In 1994 he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

The staged-reading will feature several actors whom audience members will recognize from past Two River productions.

Performances are scheduled in Two River Theater, 21 Bridge Avenue in Red Bank (across from the Galleria), for Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 5 at 2:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling the TRTC box office at 732-345-1400.
