(RED BANK, NJ) Terry Waldo, the noted virtuoso ragtime, stride, blues pianist, and protégé of the late Eubie Blake, will be the first performer in Two River Theatre Company's new Two River Too series, a slate of unique events and special performances being offered in addition to TRTC's regular season of theatrical productions. Waldo salts the Ragtime genre with humor in the same way Victor Borge mixed comedy and the classical piano repertoire. This premiere event of the new series is Mr. Waldo’s This is Ragtime and he will star in this live concert, which will be presented Friday and Saturday, November 12 & 13 at 8:00 p.m., in the Earth Room of the Lincroft Unitarian Church, 1475 West Front Street.
Terry Waldo has appeared in concert all over the world, including several major shows for George Wein’s JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Terry is also a vocalist, an arranger, a comedian—famous for his dry wit—and leader of many highly regarded musical groups. He is a composer not only of rags and show tunes, but of movie scores as well. In addition, he is a scholar and an historian. His This Is Ragtime is the definitive book on the subject, and his 26-part series, with the same title, for National Public Radio fueled the 1970's ragtime revival.
"We feel it's a 'tip of the hat' to Mr. Basie to start off our new Red Bank series with a jazz piano player," said Ron Steelman, Director of Marketing for TRTC.
In the recording world, Waldo has produced over forty albums under his own name and performed and composed for hundreds of TV programs. Terry wrote a song heard on the soundtrack album of the 2003 hit film, Elf, called "Christmas Island ('That Old Christmas Moon')," which was performed by Leon Redbone.
"We're delighted to have someone of Mr. Waldo's stature inaugurate our Two River Too series, said Guy Gsell, Managing Director of TRTC. "This new series will expand greatly once we move into our new Red Bank theatre on Bridge Avenue across from the Galleria."
Piano lovers, music lovers, jazz lovers and music students won’t want to miss this extremely entertaining and swinging performance. Not only does This Is Ragtime make your toes tap and put a smile on your face, but Waldo also sprinkles in just enough history to help us understand why ragtime is so important to American music and to jazz.
Other offerings in the 2004/2005 Two River Too series include the concert event New Music from New Jersey Composers, featuring works by Melinda Wagner, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for music. This concert will be performed by IoniSation New Music Ensemble with special guest, The Olympia String Quartet and will be presented Saturday, March 12, 2005, 8:00 p.m., for one-time-only in the sanctuary at United Methodist Church of Red Bank, 147 Broad Street. Finally, to close the Two River Too season, a staged reading of Sam Shepard's Suicide in Bb (with live music) will be presented in Two River Theatre Company's new Red Bank building, on the smaller Marion Huber stage, on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival, June 3 - 5, 2005.
